We welcome the interested public, rescue, sanctuary, welfare organizations, veterinarians and members to participate in hands-on care of the aviary and the birds. TGF willingly provides its materials to interested volunteers to distribute appropriately in their local area. The Foundation developed a volunteer training manual for training, teaching, educational and safety purposes. The aviary hosts family fun, on-site volunteer work weekends and picnic lunches at the aviary quarterly throughout the year.

July Volunteer of the Month

Whitney Ellison

Whitney began volunteering with TGF early this year after watching a segment on The Gabriel Foundation on 9 News.  She comes in several days a week to the Acoma location and helps with cage papers, cleaning, dishes, laundry, food preparation and anything that’s asked of her.  She does everything with a smile and an eagerness that brightens everyone’s day.

Her favorite bird at TGF is a little African Grey named Baby Two, whom Whitney fondly refers to as Bella.  We think Bella is a much better name as well!  Every afternoon when Whitney is finished with caring for the Acoma flock, she comes into the room where Bella is finishing up her quarantine.  The two of them visit for awhile and it’s quite obvious when Whitney leaves that Bella would like to go with her!

Whitney has several birds of her own:  a Severe Macaw named Jaz, a Quaker Parrot named JaJa and a Sun Conure named Domino.  Will Bella someday join her flock?  We can only cross our fingers.  In the meantime Bella enjoys her visits and her lovely personality, as do we all!

A Special Thanks to our Volunteers!

    IT'S ALL ABOUT THE BIRDS!

A few weeks ago, 25 very crafty TGF volunteers came to the Aviary in Elizabeth and worked diligently to make dozens of new toys for the TGF flock. On Dec. 26th, Christine S., Ruth R., Gayla M. and Gaye T. organized this new inventory at the Aviary and then loaded up the entire back of The Birdbrain van, readying it for a trip to downtown Denver for some very unsuspecting birdy recipients!

Braving some incredibly cold weather and icy roads, these dedicated TGF volunteers drove to The Birdbrain on Saturday, January 1st, to deliver new toys to every feathered resident! The van was backed up to the door, and the dozens of boxes were unloaded. Everyone got to work retrieving toys from cages that had seen better days, and then quickly replaced those with at least two new pvc toys in their places! They loaded each toy with a roll of newspaper print as an added treat, gave every bird new phone books to destroy, and placed foraging boxes in every cage as well. The smaller birds received mini-pvc toys, beaded cotton shoelaces and even 'mini' phone books, hung from the tops of their cages!

The team organized the toy making area, creating a work and storage space for toy parts and finished toys. Through the cacophony of the birds, there came a knock on the back door...it was another volunteer, Peter W., just stopping by to see if his help might be needed! By then Hector, TGF staff member, had arrived, and had started preparing New Year's Day brunch for the flock. Peter stepping right up to help Hector, easing his workload.

All in all, it took the TGF volunteers about four hours to ensure that every bird had new cage enrichment and to help Hector. Once everyone had their bowls of food and new toys, the room became very, very quiet, as the birds settled in for a good meal and some well-deserved fun time.

Many thanks to Christine, Ruth, Gayla and Peter for spending their Saturday with the TGF flock, for the TGF flock. Today TGF volunteers once again make it abundantly clear that, "It's all about the birds!"
