Sponsor a Bird from the Pueblo Flock - and Name That Bird!

The 42 members of the Pueblo Flock came to The Gabriel Foundation under tragic circumstances. The fact that any of these birds is still alive is a miracle and demonstrates an incredible will to live. More than 100 rescue birds have come to live at The Gabriel Foundation in the past two months. This was unexpected and we are working tirelessly to get them all settled. We need your help so that each parrot gets the care they require to ensure a happy, healthy future. They have been through so much - and now they have a fighting chance!

When you sign up for a one-year sponsorship for one of the Pueblo Flock, you will get the privilege of choosing your bird's name!  What a special bond you will share! Your name will be posted here, next to your parrot's photo and new moniker! You will also receive a magnet with a photo of your bird and regular updates on his/her status!

You can raise additional funds for your bird by starting your very own online fundraising page through firstgiving.com. Firstgiving will walk you through the process of personalizing your page and then you can send it out to friends, family, colleagues - anyone you can think of to help you raise money for a parrot in need. It's so easy, just click here to get started!

You may sponsor any of the birds below with your credit card or PayPal account; simply fill in the name you have chosen and click the donate feather below the bird you wish to sponsor.

FIFI

Sponsored by Genevieve Launay

During World War II, Fifi was the nickname of French resistants, for at least two reasons: first, the official name FFI (Forces Françaises de l'Interieur); second, Fifi was (and still is) a very popular moniker for companion birds, and birds symbolize Hope. Indeed all of the Pueblo birds kept hoping for better days through their horrible ordeal; then came their TGF angels "on a wing and a prayer" showing, in these unimaginable circumstances, great Faith and efficient Charity. Now is the time of Perseverance. What an honor to be associated in this undertaking! I am in awe of the loving care that the birds receive and I send my deepest thanks to TGF.

ASHA

Sponsored by Heather Scott

I am a Tibetan Buddhist, which is connected to India in a very strong way. "Asha" means 'hope' in Sanskrit (the language of my religion). I believe that this flock not only represent hope in their strong will to live and to make it through horrible conditions but they also represent hope in that they are a reminder that people can care enough to come together to help a sentient being in trouble. Even though the task seemed overwhelming, the word was spread that they needed help and it came. When hope is lost, misery soon follows. When hope is restored, suffering is less not only for the being that has hope dispite a horrible situation, but to anyone who hears of it.

BRENDA

Sponsored by Kari Terhark

Brenda is the name of my childhood friend.  Brenda works as a Physician’s assistant and is one of the most compassionate, patient persons I know.  When I saw this bird I feel in love with its facial expression and couldn’t resist sponsoring it on behalf of my friend.

BOB

Sponsored by Robin Asbury

I'm sponsoring a Blue & Gold in memory of my dad who loved them!

RILEY

CHURCHILL

HOPE

Sponsored by Allison O'Neill

This bird looked SO sad in its cage - eyes closed and head lowered, as if it had lost all joy in living.  Its only recourse to deal with its misery was to pluck itself.  My initial thought was, "I hope this bird pulls through," - and hence the name.

TAI

Sponsored by Allison O'Neill

This macaw looked quite stressed and unhappy - a plucker, but only through sheer boredom and a poor diet.  I wished it to find itself comfortable and content, so I named it "Tai" - which is Chinese for "peace".

SAKURA

Sponsored by TSUBASA Bird Foundation, Japan

Sakura is Cherry Blossom and Japanese all love Sakura. Sakura nurses everyone's soul and gives us comfort. We hope the bird will find peace of mind.

DELILAH

Sponsored by Sally Davidson

JAYA

Sponsored by Shauna & Allen Roberts, TGF Board of Directors

Jaya is Indonesian for victorious!

JEANINE

Sponsored by Kari Terhark

Jeanine is the name of my best friend in  Colorado.  Jeanine never lets anything get in the way of getting what she wants, and has an infectious, can-do attitude.  This bird’s posture suggests that it was meant to be named after Jeanine!

PUEBLO JACK

SNOWFLAKE
Sponsored by Michelle M. Chancey

Ever since I saw and heard about the rescue of the birds from Pueblo my heart has wanted to do something to help.  I wasn't sure how I should proceed until I saw the photo of Snowflake (the bare-eyed Cockatoo on the sponsorship list).  It was love at first sight for me but I wanted to sleep on the decision.  This morning I shared with Calvin the story of the Pueblo birds and about seeing one that seemed extra special to me.  He eagerly wanted to see the photos of the birds and when he saw Snowflake he immediately felt drawn to her/him as well.  When I asked what he thought would be a good name he immediately said "Snowflake" and I had to agree.

INDIRA

MOJITO

TSUBASA

Sponsored by TSUBASA Bird Foundation, Japan

TSUBASA is the rescue group's name and has the meaning of "wing" as well. We hope the bird will be free from the past sad experience and hardship and spread his wing with hope for the future.

AALFIE

Sponsored by the Animal Assistance Foundation

VICTORY

Sponsored by Gwen & Helene Stuurwold

This handsome boy has been named Victory because he has survived terrible hardships and now has a chance at a full and rich life.  He also stands as a reminder of all the beautiful birds in the Pueblo Flock who did not survive to see their own victory.  My sister and I wish to express our gratitude to all the Gabriel folks who work so hard to continue helping this Lost Flock.

MARIO

Sponsored by the Ray Family

SAMURAI

Sponsored by Yuuko Kanazawa

I'm YUUKO KANAZAWA. I became the sponsor of Blue & Gold macaw 5472. I knew the rescue of the matter in pet bird group "TSUBASA" in Japan now. If bird's happiness can be helped even if it is a little, I am also very happy...because it is poor as the name is a number.

The name is "SAMURAI". It is strong, energetic, and it wants it. It is a name from such feelings.

It is believed that the bird can regain brightness as long as the man who nurses has love. Happiness and health must be given to all of the bird.

GOLDEY

Sponsored by Tambri Iriti & Marina Tiwold

When I first learned about the Pueblo situation, I knew I wanted to help. So, with the help of Marina (who is 6 1/2 yrs old), she picked and named Goldey. She agreed (with a little help from Mom) that we would give up buying some things so we could take care of Goldey. I have volunteered with parrot rescue for over 15 yrs,  there was a very special Blue and Gold Macaw named Gunner that touched my life for many years and he died in April 2009, this is also in his memory.

J.T.
Sponsored by Cindy Whitley

I have been a huge fan of the show SURVIVOR.  And there isn't any doubt these precious birds in the Pueblo Flock are not SURVIVORS!  They have had to live in terrible living conditions and they have had to exist on very little to eat very similar to what the contestants on SURVIVOR have to deal with for 39 days.  So, I decided to name my sponsored bird after one of the contestants on SURVIVOR.

FRIEDA

Sponsored by Carol Ruley

OLIVER

Sponsored by Linda Compton

Oliver is named in memory of another Oliver, a long-time breeder who came to Flitesong Cage Bird Sanctuary with no name and very little history, other than the fact he had been a 'breeder bird' for about thirty years. When this other Oliver first stepped out of the carrier and onto my arm, he dropped his head for some scritches and made that wonderful sound the macaws make when they are happy, kind of a 'wrock' greeting. Oliver had certainly been someone's pet so very long ago. Oliver kept saying his name, but not very clearly. When I finally figured it out, I started calling him Oliver and he responded! He was the focus of my Living and Learning with Parrots online class and was a challenge and a delight. He had a good life with us for a few years before succumbing to heart failure. When I heard about The Pueblo Flock, I wanted to help in some way.  As I was scrolling down the picture list of birds needing sponsorship, I was hoping there was a Green-Wing I might be able to sponsor. There he was! And so now there is another Oliver who is getting the best care at The Gabriel Foundation. It is a privilege to be able to help. Thank you, TGF, for giving the public this creative option to contribute from a distance to the new quality of life all The Pueblo Flock now have with you. CJ

Sponsored by Cindy Whitley

CJ is being sponsored in memory of my grandparents who encouraged and who fostered my love & compassion for birds, in memory of my beloved Hahn's Macaw Sugar who brought such delight and such joy to our household who passed away October 2008 and lastly in memory of our beloved Black Lab Casey who died in July 2008.  My husband Jim and I always smiled and laughed on how well our flock had trained Casey to respond to their different calls and screams and we always wished she minded us as well as she did "the birds."  What a honor and what a joy it is to be able to sponsor another one of these remarkable birds!  And thank you TGF for allowing us to participate in this amazing sponsorship program!

SPUTNIK

Sponsored by Melissa & Brett Huffman

A little background about my husband and I: we used to be zookeepers at the Cincinnati Zoo. My husband was an avian zoologist for about 10 years, and I worked general zoology for about 6 years. Brett’s specialty was large parrots and hornbills.

Naturally, with my husband working in the Cincinnati Zoo bird house for almost a decade, we have our own little flock here in California. We already have a rescue Grey and a GC Conure, and so getting another bird is somewhat out of the question until we relocate to a larger home.

We always wanted a Macaw, especially since Brett spent 10 years working with them (even the extremely difficult ones). We’ve been wanting to help for a long time, and when I saw the sponsorship opportunity your organization offers, we knew it was the perfect chance for us to pitch in without physically getting another bird.

I made a huge career change about 4 years ago from zoology to the space industry, and I always wanted to name my next bird “Sputnik”. I can’t wait to hear more about 5447, his/her personality and how he/she’s been doing.
