WAYS YOU CAN HELP

VOLUNTEER

If you would like to volunteer your time, please contact our Volunteer Coordinator, Gaye Thomasson, at volunteers@thegabrielfoundation.org or (303)629-5900 ext. 235. Gaye is volunteering her time and there may be a delay in responding. If you need immediate assistance, call Patti Christie at (303)629-5900 ext. 213.

We welcome the interested public, rescue, sanctuary, welfare organizations, veterinarians and members to participate in hands-on care of the aviary and the birds. TGF willingly provides its materials to interested volunteers to distribute appropriately in their local area. The Foundation developed a volunteer training manual for training, teaching, educational and safety purposes. The aviary hosts family fun, on-site volunteer work weekends and picnic lunches at the aviary quarterly throughout the year.

MEET OUR VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH!

Compassion and anticipation are two words that come to mind when The Gabriel Foundation staff thinks about our April Volunteer of the Month, Bob Perlman.

Bob has been volunteering his time for quite a few months at the Aviary and Adoption Center in Elizabeth, Colorado. He is a skilled construction contractor, and plies his many talents all over the Aviary campus.  Bob noticed that the smoke alarm/carbon monoxide system in the buildings was not functioning at its best level, and made it his mission to repair and/or replace all necessary parts.   Whenever there is an outlet that needs repair, a seam that needs caulk, an electrical wire that needs attention, Bob is there to help.  He doesn’t stop with the structural needs of the Aviary; he is also there to drill and chop wood as well as cut phone books into parrot-manageable toys for the TGF flock. Recently, the Aviary added two modular buildings, one to expand the Veterinary Clinic, the other for boarding birds.  Both facilities came to TGF as blank slates: no shelves, no cabinets, no  plumbing, and in need of a good scrubbing. There was a pressing time crunch to get these buildings readied.  Within a few days, both buildings were cleaned, outfitted with storage space, cabinets, shelving, and running water. Cages had to be moved in and placed for new occupants.  It was Bob who led this charge.

Bob has helped out with snow removal as well.  Now, that may not sound like a ‘big deal,’ but if you live anywhere near the Aviary or have visited in the Winter or Spring months, you understand that the snows and drifts can be horrific.  Being able to get to the Aviary buildings in inclement weather is an absolute: the TGF flock needs their care, no matter what the weather is outside, 24/7.  Bob understood this need and has made sure that the parking area, walkways and road into the complex are cleared of snow so that the TGF staff and volunteers can safely get to their jobs.   Bob and his family are parrot owners on a small scale; they have two parakeets. By spending time at the Aviary, he is expanding his understanding of just what it takes to have healthy, happy birds, whether small or large!   He always notices the birds surrounding him when he is working and comments on their well-being.

We appreciate all of Bob’s help, his expertise and kindness, and are grateful that he takes time to volunteer with The Gabriel Foundation.  Thank you, Bob, for being our April Volunteer of the Month.
