ALL ABOUT 'TOO'S
We kick off summer with not just one Bird of the Month, but many. If you have ever visited the Aviary and Adoption Center, you probably noticed our vast population of cockatoos. ‘Toos are one of the most misunderstood psittacines, and lack of knowledge and understanding of this magnificent creature results in their being the most abundant species at The Gabriel Foundation.
Joey, Wiley, Scooby Doo and Tico. Java, Kiwi, Buddy and Popcorn. And many an Angel, a Casper and a Sydney. These are just a few of the cockatoos spending time at the Aviary, awaiting homes. Some have been here for more than four years. There are many misconceptions about ‘toos which leads to them being our most relinquished bird and often dissuades people from considering them as pets. They are not a parrot that will sit quietly in a cage or be forgotten in a corner. If they are not happy with the way they are being treated, they let it be known. However, too much attention and “cuddling” can also lead to destructive behavior – a balance must be achieved. Provided with the proper environment and interaction with humans who understand their needs, cockatoos can make wonderful pets.
The Gabriel Foundation offers valuable resources to help ensure that when you bring a bird home, it will be a forever home. Take Beyond the Bird Basics, this class is required to adopt from TGF and has been taken by many professionals who have found it extremely useful. And, consider sponsorship while you educate yourself about the species and get to know a bird. It is the best way to determine if a particular parrot will be the right addition to your family.
